Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Q & A

Can I get ESG if I’m not eligible for other weight loss surgeries?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a weight loss procedure for adults with obesity who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Traditional weight loss surgeries like gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are only done on people with a BMI of 40 or higher.

If you’re not eligible for weight loss surgery, but struggle with obesity and can’t reach your weight goals with diet and exercise, then ESG could be a promising treatment choice.

ALIVA Weight Loss specializes in obesity medicine and offers many treatments to help adults reach a healthy weight.

What happens during endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive procedure using an endoscope, a thin tube with a light and camera inserted through your mouth and into your stomach.

Unlike traditional weight loss procedures which are surgeries, no abdominal incisions are needed. However, the obesity specialist at Aliva Weight Loss performs the procedure endoscopically using a general anesthetic so that you sleep through the procedure.

Once in the stomach, the Gastroenterologist at Aliva Weight Loss uses a suturing device to apply 6-8 folds along the greater curve of the stomach (the outer and larger portion of the stomach), creating a sleevelike pouch that significantly reduces the size of your stomach.

The procedure limits how much food you can eat and delays food movement from the stomach into the small intestine. This allows you to feel full longer.

What can I expect during recovery from endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day. You could experience vomiting and pain during the healing process which is managed with medications during recovery and with prescription medications after discharge.

You need to stick to a liquid diet for few weeks, then slowly advance to solid foods as you heal. Your doctor at Aliva Weight Loss explains the diet before your procedure so that you can prepare.

Full recovery from ESG takes about a month.

How much weight can I lose with endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Weight-loss results vary following ESG. However, you can lose up to 20% of your total body weight and upto 60% of excess body weight during the first year based on studies. You need to closely follow your nutrition plan to get the best results and maintain your new weight.

Notes:Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, or ESG, reduces the volume of the stomach. Under general anesthesia, our gastroenterologist will apply six to eight plications along the greater curve of the stomach.
